Two Women Arrested on Suspicion of Murder in Fatal Beating at Metro Station

A 23-year-old and 24-year-old woman are accused in the man's beating death

Authorities on Wednesday confirmed the arrests of two women in the fatal beating of a 65-year-old man on a Metro Blue Line platform, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Tracy Gomez, 24, and Virginia Butler, 23, were arrested and booked on suspicion of murder, homicide detectives said.

Gomez was arrested Sunday in Hawthorne and was being held in lieu of more than $1 million bail. Butler was arrested Wednesday in Los Angeles and was being held in lieu of $1 million bail, officials said.

They are accused of punching and kicking John Whitmore as he waited for the Blue Line at the Willowbrook/Rosa Parks station on June 13, officials said.

Whitmore died at a hospital June 20.

Gomez is expected to be arraigned Thursday, and Butler's arraignment was expected for Friday.

Whitmore’s brother-in-law Corey Aldridge said in June that he visited the 66-year-old man in the hospital before he died.

"It was obvious that he had a serious concussion," Aldridge said. "His speech was disjointed, but he did say that he was being followed and harassed by a group of women."

Surveillance footage was released of two women who investigators believed were responsible for the attack. A $10,000 reward was offered for information leading to the attackers' arrests.

Correction: An earlier version of this article listed John Whitmore as 66, but he is 65 years old.
