Police have arrested a man who allegedly lit two people on fire at a South Los Angeles homeless encampment.
Phillip Darryl Cole is accused of approaching an empty lot at 83rd Street and Vermont Avenue around 6:40 a.m. Thursday, throwing a flammable liquid on two people and lighting them on fire, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The victims suffered serious injuries, police said.
Cole was arrested about 4 p.m. Saturday after patrol officers saw him sitting at a bus bench at Florence Avenue and Figueroa Street, LAPD said in a statement released Sunday. He was taken into custody without incident.
Cole, described as a transient, was also a suspect in several robberies, police said. No details about the robberies were made available.
He is being held on $1.27 million bail.
Anyone with information is asked to call the LAPD's 77th Street Station at (323) 786-5420.
