Police Arrest Felon Accused of Shooting Driver in Moreno Valley

The man had a prior felony conviction for possession of a firearm and illegal possession of a silencer.

A convicted felon accused of shooting and seriously wounding a motorist in Moreno Valley was arrested Thursday, a Riverside County sheriff's sergeant said.

A man was driving in the area of JFK Drive and Perris Boulevard about 8:50 a.m. Wednesday when he was shot, causing him to lose control of his SUV, which crashed into a wall on the east side of the intersection, said Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Wally Clear.

He was transported to Riverside University Medical Center in critical condition. His name was not immediately released. A woman riding in the vehicle was not hurt.

Detectives developed leads indicating that Richard Dupree Coleman, 40, of Moreno Valley was allegedly involved in the attack, for reasons not specified.

Coleman was located on Filaree Avenue about 4 a.m. Thursday, at which point, he was taken into custody without a struggle.

He was booked into the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside on suspicion of attempted murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle, being a felon in possession of a firearm and illegal possession of a silencer. He's being held on $2 million bail.

Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to contact the sheriff's Central Homicide Unit at 951-955-2777.
