”An Incredible Gift”: Double Arm Transplant Recipient Gives Thanks

Will Lautzenheiser, a former film teacher who lost his arms and legs to a deadly bacteria, expressed gratitude Tuesday after receiving a double-arm transplant at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. “I hope to be able to live up to the memory of this man and make this worthwhile,” Lautzenheiser said of the unknown donor. “This person who is anonymous to me will always be as close to me as my own skin now, and it’s really an incredible gift.” Lautzenheiser lost both arms and legs after an aggressive streptococcus A infection led to sepsis and required quadruple amputation in 2011. It took a team of 35 clinicians, including 13 surgeons, to complete the surgery that lasted close to nine hours.
