"Point Break" was the great Keanu Reeves' first foray into the world of lead action star, and now that venerable surf/crime classic is going to get a facelift.
Alcon Entertainment has bought the rights to the 1991 classic "Point Break," which starred Reeves, Patrick Swayze, Lori Petty and Gary Busey, and was directed by Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow.
"The new version is set in the world of international extreme sports, and like the original involves an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a criminal ring," the studio said in a press release.
If you've never spent a day on the couch with the flu, "Point Break" is the story of Johnny Utah (Reeves), a young FBI agent who infiltrates a gang of bank-robbing surfers led by Swayze. While we normally endorse the remaking of bad films, the terribleness of "Point Break" is what's at the heart of its greatness. The one-star version of "Point Break" is a freewheeling guilty pleasure of pure stupidity--a two-star version will surely be an exercise in tedium.
And what's up with the Swayze remakes? Tomorrow is the second anniversary of his too-soon death, and just this summer has come word of remakes of first "Dirty Dancing" and now this. What's next, a "To Fong Woo: Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar"? (There will be no joking about "Road House" around here)
"Point Break," which is getting fast-tracked by the studio, will soon begin looking for a director. And if Alcon's rights deal is any indication, there could be a "Point Break" video game in our future.
