Newport Beach Partially Closed After Shark Sighting

A two-mile section of ocean in Newport Beach was closed for part of Monday when an 8-foot shark was spotted off the coast.

The closure covered an area stretching about one mile on each side of the Newport Pier from 10th to 44th street.

The shark was sighted around 11 a.m. off the Newport Pier. It was not acting in an aggressive manner, but the closure was ordered as a precaution and could extend until Tuesday morning.

No additional sightings were reported by 4:30 p.m. and the closure was lifted.

Advisory signs were put out on the beaches, warning visitors about the sighting.
