Man Jumping in Front of Traffic Killed by Hit-and-Run Driver: Police

Police are seeking a driver who struck and killed a man who was reportedly jumping in front of traffic in Long Beach early Monday morning, officials said.

Officers responded to an attempted suicide call indicating that a man was putting himself in the way of oncoming traffic and lying in the street. During the call, police were notified that a vehicle had struck the man.

The crash occurred around 1:15 a.m. in the 3600 block of East 7th Street, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Officers arrived to find the man lying in the street unconscious. Long Beach Fire Department paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene, officials said.

The driver and vehicle involved in the fatal crash fled from the location in an unknown direction, officials said.

The vehicle was believed to be a white 2006 to 2010 make Chrysler 300 with front end damage. There was no description of the driver.

Police closed 7th Street at Loma Avenue during the investigation.
