Thanksgiving in Los Angeles County will be marked Thursday with customary events feeding the poor and homeless and distance runs, with accommodations made because of the forecast of rain.
The Fred Jordan Mission's 75th annual Traditional Thanksgiving Banquet & Birthday will be held inside the mission, rather than outdoors. The 49th annual Union Station Homeless Services Dinner in the Park has been shifted from Pasadena's Central Park to the covered parking lot of the Adult Center.
Head and neck covers and hundreds of umbrellas will be distributed at Drumstick Dash LA, an annual 5K and 10K event in North Hollywood's Arts District that raises funds for the homeless and hungry throughout the San Fernando Valley.
The Fred Jordan Mission is billing its Thanksgiving Banquet & Birthday as its "biggest and best," with a ton of turkey to be served, along with 525 pounds of stuffing, 500 pounds of mashed potatoes, 80 gallons of gravy, 400 pounds of corn, 500 pounds of candied yams, and hundreds of pumpkin, apple and pecan pies.
The thousands of homeless and working poor diners will also receive gift bags with socks, blankets, snack and food bags and hygiene kits.
The Midnight Mission will serve Thanksgiving brunch to nearly 2,500 homeless and near-homeless men, women and children, according to Georgia Berkovich, its director of public affairs.
Volunteer servers are expected to include Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva and actor Mr. T.
