Man Allegedly Attempts to Rob Off-Duty Deputy at Mall, Gets Shot

A man who allegedly tried to rob an off-duty sheriff's deputy and his family at a Riverside mall ended up getting shot and later arrested, police said Sunday.

Multiple callers reported hearing shots being fired at around 9:45 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot for the Galleria at Tyler, the Riverside City police Officer Ryan Railsback said.

The alleged would-be robber confronted the off-duty deputy and his family as they were leaving the mall and demanded their belongings at gunpoint, according to Railsback.

"This attempted armed robbery resulted in a deputy-involved shooting," he said.

However, it's not clear who pulled the trigger.

The suspected robber suffered gunshot wounds then fled the scene in a vehicle and drove to a hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries, Railsback said.

Officers later arrived at the hospital and arrested him on suspicion of attempted robbery, according to police.

Victor Hugo Ochoa, 25, of Moreno Valley was booked into the Robert Presley Detention on suspicion of attempted armed robbery and three counts of personal use of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

The agency to which the off-duty sheriff's deputy belonged was not disclosed.
