School Police Officer Shoots Person During Traffic Stop in South LA

Although an LA School Police officer was involved, the shooting did not take place on a school campus, and no students were affected.

A Los Angeles School Police officer shot and wounded a person during an attempted traffic stop in South Los Angeles Monday, and the officer was hospitalized with injuries suffered when the person allegedly drove into the lawman.

The shooting occurred about 11:10 a.m. at Broadway and 86th Place, authorities said.

The source of the dispute that led to the shooting was a lawnmower, according to a witness who did not wish to be identified. The witness told that one of the men involved in a dispute pulled out a gun.

LA School Police said two officers were driving by and intervened. That's when, police say, one of the men involved in the dispute drove into the officer and that action led to the officer opening fire.

Images from the scene showed multiple bullet holes in the truck's windshield.

Paramedics took the man injured in the shooting to a hospital in unknown condition. The officer, who was alert and talking to paramedics, was also placed on a gurney and loaded into an ambulance.

Morales said the officer and the wounded man were both hospitalized and considered stable. Another person was questioned at the scene of the shooting, but it was unclear if that person was arrested.

Although a School Police officer was involved, police stressed the shooting did not take place on a school campus, and no students were affected.
