Hollywood Streets Closed for Shooting Investigation

Streets were closed in a Hollywood neighborhood Wednesday morning during a search following a shooting that involved an off-duty officer.

The officer on his way to work opened fire at about 5:30 a.m. near Van Ness and Franklin avenues during what police described as a confrontation with a man. Details regarding the confrontation and the man's description were not immediately available.

Other officers responded to the area after a call for help from the officer, a 20-year veteran.

Residents reported the sound of at least one gunshot followed by a police response.

"Other residents were out, trying to figure out what was going on," said resident Clay Summers.

Authorities said they are searching for at least one person in the area. SWAT and K-9 units responded to the neighborhood, just northeast of the 101 Freeway.

Police called off the search by 5 p.m.

No injuries were reported. It was not immediately clear whether the subject sought by police has a weapon.

Franklin Avenue was closed near Taft Avenue during the search. Students at Cheremoya Elementary School were re-directed to Le Conte Middle School due to the police activity.
