An Orange County man convicted of attempting to aid ISIS was sentenced Monday to 30 years in federal prison

Nader Elhuzayel was convicted in June of attempting to aid the Islamic State. He was also found guilty of bank fraud.

In June, the federal jury that convicted Elhuzayel also convicted Muhanad Badawi of aiding and abetting the attempt to support ISIS. Badawi is scheduled to be sentenced on Oct. 17.

The two men were arrested in May 2015 at Los Angeles International Airport after Elhuzayel tried to board a plane to Turkey to join ISIS. Badawi had purchased the one-way ticket for him.

Both men’s posts on social media also expressed their support for the Islamic State. Elhuzayel used the ISIS flag as his Facebook profile picture. Badawi also made a video of Elhuzayel swearing allegiance to the leader of ISIS and pledging to become an ISIS fighter, according to court documents.

Elhuzayel and Badawi have both been in federal custody without bond since their arrest.
