A water main broke near a major intersection in Beverly Hills Thursday morning, damaging some of the street, fire officials said.

A pipe leaked in an alley occurred near Wilshire and Robertson boulevards just after 6 a.m., according to the Beverly Hills Fire Department.

The asphalt around the leak sustained water damage, fire officials said -- a sinkhole formed at the break -- and water seeped into businesses.

A Steinway Piano Gallery appeared the hardest-hit, but because the business was in the midle of renovations, no pianos were in the showroom to be damaged.

Water service was being shut off in the area for repairs, fire officials said. Repairs were expected to continue into the afternoon, with some residents nearby with low water pressure.

Officials said the damaged pipe was six-inches long and put in place in 1924.
