A woman in her mid-30s was found dead Friday at a hotel in Artesia and investigators believe she was fatally assaulted.
The woman's death was reported about 10:40 a.m. in the 16900 block of Pioneer Boulevard, near the Artesia (91) Freeway, according to Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez of the Sheriff's Information Bureau.
Deputies responding to a report of a female not breathing were directed to the woman, who was found lying unconscious in the middle of a room at the hotel, identified in news reports as the Artesia Inn and Suites, Navarro-Suarez said.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
"It appeared the woman suffered traumatic injury from an assault resulting in her death," Navarro-Suarez said. "It is unknown at this point in the investigation if a weapon was used."
No arrests were reported.
Sheriff's Homicide Bureau detectives were investigating the fatality.
