MURRIETA, Calif. -- A section of the Escondido (215) Freeway remained closed Thursday near Los Alamos Road in Murrieta because of a sinkhole in the southbound lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The sinkhole, which is 25 feet across and 60 feet deep, was reported at 4:10 p.m. Wednesday, said CHP Officer Ron Thatcher.
The whole was apparently caused by a broken water pipe, he said.
The road was expected to be repaired and reopened Friday afternoon, according to the CHP.
Until then, the freeway will be closed at the I-15 and I-215 split, near Los Alamos Road.
Big rigs traveling south on the 215 will be diverted to state Route 74 in Perris and then west to the southbound I-15 because some surface streets surrounding the sinkhole site cannot bear the weight of large rigs, Thatcher said.
