Eat a Scorpion: Ripley's Bug Fest

"Eat a bug, get a discount or free admission to Ripley's Believe It or Not! Hollywood."

Did you get your fill of bugs at the Natural History Museum at the May 18-19 Bug Fair, the nation's largest insect festival?

No?

And do you know what we mean by "fill" there, wink wink? Yep, we mean the eating of bugs. You can do it at Bug Fair -- the cooking demos are crunchily famous -- and you munch on something many-legged at Ripley's Believe It or Not! Hollywood on Friday, May 23 and Saturday, May 24.

It's the wacky institution's fourth annual "An Insect Cook-Off," but unlike many of the dishes at Bug Fair, which sometimes mix in insects in subtler ways, things will not be as, uh, subtle at Ripley's.

Did you expect anything else though? From Ripley's? Honestly? No, you didn't.

Here's the upshot: David G. Gordon, the "Bug Chef," will be in the house. Visitors are invited to chomp down on "Basic Bugs" for a chance to get a discounted admission to the museum or a "Super Awesome Uber Bug" to get in for free.

The Basic Bugs include "scorpions, cockroaches, ants, spiders, termites, worms, caterpillars, grasshoppers, dung beetles, wasps, and crickets." Um. Hmm. If those are the Basic Bugs, our mind reels over what the Super Awesome Uber Bug might be. So far, though, that bug is being kept under wraps.

Tempted? Even if you don't want to eat a bug, you can still swing by and watch Chef Gorden cook up Scorpion Scallopine or Crickets and Orzo. And if you yourself want to try your hand at this crunchy cookery, buy a copy of his "The Eat-a-Bug Cookbook."
