The Acton-based Animal Acres, the famed sanctuary for pigs and turkeys and donkeys and goats and beasties galore, probably expected to be in the headlines this week. After all, the sanctuary's annual gala was scheduled for Saturday, September 5th, and a host of celebrity and non-celebrity folk were expected to attend, the better to visit with all the oinkers and moo-makers and raise funds for the refuge.
But. Animal Acres found itself in the headlines for entirely different reasons when the Station fire crept closer to the town of Acton, the sanctuary's location. The LA Times reported on the huge evacuation of the animals -- it sounds like the move went well -- but a question remained about the fate of the following weekend's big event.
Now, good news: a new place has been secured -- Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades -- and a new date -- September 12th. Ellen Degeneres is the honorary gala chairperson, and a number of authors/actors/activists are slated to attend. Can you? There are still a few tickets left. There will be a vegan dinner catered by Madeleine's Bistro, and an award ceremony. And lots of lovin'-on-the-animals talk.
