Snow Season Begins in Mammoth

4.5 inches of fresh powder greets the first visitors

Dust off your snow boots and sled, it's officially snow season.

Thursday marked the official opening day for Mammoth, and was greeted with every snow-bunny's dream: fresh powder. More than 4 inches of new snow greeted skiers and snowboards as the first chair lifts started up at 8:30 a.m.

"Snow base depth is 14"-32" thanks to the over a foot and a half of snow at Main Lodge and the over 2 feet of snow on top that we received in the past week," according to the latest snow report.

Mammoth is kicking off the new season with festivities all week long including concerts and film screenings.

Bear Mountain, another popular snow spot, has also experienced snow, but has yet to set an official date to its season.

Northern California's Lake Tahoe is also anticipating its impending snow season, reporting three inches of snow Wednesday night. The season officially starts Nov. 20.
