Los Angeles is a sushi lover's paradise.  Any freeway can lead you to a great neighborhood hideaway or a upscale sushi bar.

Now comes word a popular ingredient in sushi can save lives.

A whiff of wasabi can wake people up, according to a BBC report.   One Japanese company is using wasabi to create a smoke alarm for the deaf. This new gadget releases a strong scent of wasabi, when it detects a smoke.

But can it really arouse someone who's sound asleep?  Most people will wake up within one or two minutes, researchers said.
