People have been remembering the work and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. for decades, through volunteer efforts, community gatherings, and large parades. Several Southern California events related to Dr. King's holiday have been around for a few decades, too; it is worth noting that the annual Long Beach celebration marks its quarter century in 2013. Here are a few places to pay tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr., both on the Monday, Jan. 21 holiday and the weekend before.
PEACE AND UNITY PARADE AND CELEBRATION: This Long Beach happening, which regularly takes place on the Saturday before the Monday holiday, indeed turns 25 this year. The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. at Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue and Anaheim Street; festivities follow at Martin Luther King, Jr. park.
CITY YEAR'S DAY OF SERVICE: The non-profit organization, which is devoted to supporting education and students, is holding a day of service at Belmont High School on Monday, Jan. 21. Creating "a more engaging learning environment" via murals and inspiring quotes is on the schedule. Wield a paint brush well? Volunteer.
LA WORKS: The volunteer collective will also hold a day of service at Washington Irving Middle School on Monday, Jan. 21. Planting, landscaping, and gardening are three of the items on the schedule, but there are other activities to get engaged with. Take a look as to what is needed.
KINGDOM DAY PARADE: This major procession, which includes marching bands, civic leaders, and more traditional touches, set for Saturday, Jan. 19. The start point is Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and Western and the kick-off time? 10:15. It's year 32 for the annual event (an event that usually happens on the Monday holiday, so take note of the earlier date).
