    Pet Orphans
A Valley animal organization remembers its founder and looks ahead. Want to lend a hand? Consider volunteering.

Rescuing a dog isn't the only calling when it comes to a group or organization that takes care of four-footed furry ones who haven't yet been placed with forever families.

They're important callings, yes, agreeing to love a dog for the rest of her life or yours. But another way to help out is to volunteer for the organization, in all the many ways that are required, from tending to the animals on-site and out-reach to adoption events.

Pet Orphans of Southern California has been in the news as of late, thanks in part to the donation it received, on the part of Halo Pets, of 10,000 bowls of dog and cat food. That's a lot of kibble, but given the number of meowers and pooches still awaiting their adoption papers, a lot of kibble is needed to keep canines living in shelters healthy and robust.

But the passing of the organization's co-founder Diane Scripps, a staunch animal supporter who remained active in Southern California for many years, has also brought Pet Orphans into the news as of late. Her memorial is on Aug. 9, and while friends will gather to remember her many fine deeds and life well lived, dog devotees can remember her legacy, and the good goal of Pet Orphans, by volunteering at the Van Nuys-based shelter.

How to start? Right on this page. Pet Orphans welcomes both adult and junior volunteers, so if you have an animal-adoring teen who is 14 or 15, this might be a fine first philanthropic effort for them (you'll need to accompany your younger teen, which is another work-together bonus for the two of you).

Orientation and training are part of your start with Pet Orphans, but after you complete what you must, you'll be out with Pet Orphans pups at community happenings and assisting potential adopters as they find their perfect match.

Here's your get-started volunteer info, big-hearted dog lovers of Van Nuys and beyond.

And here's your Clear The Shelters guide to adopting your next forever friend. Join in?
