1 Killed, 1 Injured in South Gate Shooting

One man was shot dead and another was hospitalized with gunshot wounds Wednesday night in a business dispute in South Gate over vehicle parts that turned violent, authorities said.

The shooting was reported at about 5:50 p.m. in the 4900 block of Mason Street, west of the 710 Freeway, according to Deputies Mike Barraza and Trina Schrader of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Information Bureau.

South Gate police officers responded to the location regarding reports of a fight involving a ``man armed with a knife,'' authorities said.

Two men -- both considered suspects -- entered the business and argued with the victim over missing vehicle parts, authorities said.

When the arguing escalated to punches, detectives said the suspects pulled out knives on the victim.

The victim's nephew saw the brawl, grabbed a handgun and fired shots at both suspects, hitting each suspect with one shot to the upper torso, deputies
said.

One suspect -- reported to be in his 20s by a coroner's  lieutenant -- was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was taken to a hospital in
unknown condition, according to deputies, who noted that the victim's nephew
also suffered minor injuries.

Sheriff's Homicide Bureau detectives were dispatched to assist South Gate police in the investigation. Authorities collected a handgun and two knives from the scene, deputies said.

All of the people involved were being detained tonight, deputies said.

Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to contact the LASD at (323) 890-5500 or anonymously via Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.
