210 Freeway Shut Down After Big Rig Overturns

Eastbound lanes of the 210 Freeway in La Cañada Flintridge reopened Wednesday after a big rig truck overturned and spilled celery and lettuce on the highway.

The accident was reported around 1:50 a.m. on the eastbound 210 Freeway just east of the 2 Freeway, according to the CHP.

The accident occurred when the driver lost control of the truck and veered to the right shoulder and clipped a bridge guard rail. The truck then veered to the left and overturned, according to the CHP.

The driver got out of the big rig before the CHP arrived and was treated for minor injuries at the scene. His son said he was at the hospital and being checked out for possible broken bones.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident, according to the CHP.

Factoring the weight of the big rig truck and the spilled produce, there was about 80,000 pounds at the site of the crash, according to the CHP.

A Caltrans crew used heavy construction equipment to tear the roof off the trailer, then scoop up bags and crates of vegetables and drop them into dump trucks.

“It could’ve been a lot worse. Especially when you have a vehicle that size,” said CHP Officer Bryan Behar.
