Boy Dies in Suspected DUI Crash in Santa Ana

A 6-year-old boy died of injuries he suffered in a Santa Ana car crash in which both drivers may have been under the influence, police say.

The boy was in the front passenger seat of the BMW his uncle was driving when the car was apparently T-boned by a Nissan on Bristol Street and St. Andrews Place, Santa Ana police spokesman Anthony Bertagna said.

"I saw a bunch of people gathering together trying to pull the car back away from the child, then at that time the ambulance came, and they just tried to do as much as they could to get the child out of there," said witness Cassandra Guzman.

The boy, identified by police as Santa Ana resident Ivan Sandoval, was taken to the hospital, where died while undergoing surgery.

His uncle, David Wayne Cote, and the other driver were both arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, police said.

Cote was being treated at the hospital for unspecified injuries he suffered in the crash.

Cote died of his injuries on Tuesday night, according to the Orange County Coroner's Division.
