Caltrans Working to Remove Catwalks From Freeway Signage

Los Angeles County is working to remove catwalks from freeway signs across the county and also putting up new signs without catwalks, Caltrans said Tuesday.

"The goal is to get the signs [without catwalks] up on new structures," Eric Menjival of Caltrans said.

Menjival said that there may be new signs that go up with catwalks, but the goal would be to remove those catwalks in the future.

The catwalks have been used by people to vandalize freeway signs, and a person memorably used a catwalk to hold up traffic before doing a back flip onto an inflated mattress set out by rescue crews.

The removal of the catwalks is designed to help in the fight against graffiti and to also prevent the disruption of traffic flow, Menjival said.

The new signs are more reflective and easier to maintain, Caltrans said, and they have already been added to the 210 Freeway.

With a bid out to perform the same catwalk removal in San Bernardino County, Caltrans said, the idea of removing catwalks from freeways signs appears to be a trend that extends beyond LA County.
