Fugitive Army Private Suspected of Rape Could Be En Route to LA

Authorities say suspect possibly armed

An army private wanted on suspicion of rape has escaped custody and authorities believe he may be heading to Southern California, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Daniel Jay Brazelton, 20, was in custody in Hinesville, Ga., awaiting extradition to the Southland on charges that he raped a 15-year-old victim in December 2009, according to the sheriff's department.

While being transported back to jail after receiving medical attention on Feb. 11, Brazelton managed to escape.

"Sheriff's Special Victims Bureau Investigators believe he is possibly armed with a handgun and is considered dangerous. He most likely is receiving help in evading law enforcement and may be attempting to return to Los Angeles County," said Captain Mike Parker.

Brazelton was described as a white man, 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing about 170 pounds. He has shortly cropped black hair and brown eyes.

He currently lives in Fort Stewart, Ga., but was raised in Palmdale, according to the sheriff's department.

If seen, authorities asked tipsters to call 911, local law enforcement agency or the Special Victims Bureau of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department at 877-710-5273.
