El Monte Police Shoot Man in San Gabriel

A police shooting was reported before 5 a.m. on San Marino Avenue and Leslie Drive in San Gabriel

Police shot and wounded a suspected truck thief early Friday when he backed over a front lawn, dragging an SUV, before coming to a stop against the garage door of a house in San Gabriel, police said.

The driver of a large white truck that police said was stolen from a 7-Eleven in El Monte was shot about 4:40 a.m. near North San Marino Avenue and West Leslie Drive (map).

The man, who was not immediately identified, was taken to a hospital where his condition was not immediately known.

Detectives with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department were investigating the case.

Witnesses were horrified.

"Bang, bang bang," said Harry Hernandez. "I just hit the ground. I didn't know who was firing!"

Domingo Galeazzi said his brother counted 16 shots fired.

"It was scary," he said. "I didn't know who was firing at who. My mom's car is not in her driveway anymore ... It's totaled."
