Family of Slain Sheriff's Sergeant Attends Football Game in His Honor

The family attended Sunday's Minnesota Vikings game in honor of fallen sheriff's Sgt. Steve Owen.

The family of fallen sheriff's Sgt. Steve Owen attended Sunday's Minnesota Vikings game in his honor.

Owen was supposed to fulfill a dream of watching the Vikings game in person this weekend alongside his family, but a week after he was killed in the line of duty, the team flew the family out to the game and held a ceremony in his honor.

The Vikings displayed a tribute message "in loving memory" of Owen, who was fatally shot while responding to a burglary call in Lancaster on Oct. 5.

Owen's wife, mother, sons and daughters were dressed in white T-shirts featuring a photo of Owen in front of the American flag.

The 53-year-old was a decorated 29-year sheriff's department veteran who served as a sergeant in the Lancaster Station for the past five years.

He was shot when he confronted suspect Trenton Trevon Lovell, 27, a parolee now in custody and charged with capital murder, authorities said.

Owen received a Meritorious Conduct Medal in 2014, along with five of his Lancaster Station colleagues, for their roles in a pursuit and carjacking that ended with the capture of the armed suspect and the motorist's rescue.

"To the Minnesota Vikings players, fans and the entire organization, and to the LA County Professional Peace Officers Association, we THANK YOU all the way from California. We are honored and humbled by your treatment of the Owen family and your thoughtfulness," the Lancaster Sheriff's Station posted on its Facebook page.
