Police were looking for a hit-and-run driver who killed two people, including a U.S. Postal Service worker, in a crash early Saturday in South Los Angeles.
The crash happened about 1:45 a.m. at Central and Gage avenues (map). One of the victims was a postal worker on his way to work at a nearby postal facility.
Armando Aceves, 47, of Covina was driving his Honda to work when a speeding Monte Carlo rear-ended his car, killing him instantly, officials said.
The driver and two back-seat passengers of the Monte Carlo got out and ran away. The front-seat passenger, Luigi Velasquez, 20, was dead.
"The collision was very violent," said Detective Felix Padilla, of the Los Angeles Police Department.
Inside the vehicle, detectives found that the speedometer was still stuck between 90 and 95 mph, Padilla said. The speed limit there was 35 mph.
Detectives also found open beer containers and an unopened liquor bottle, Padilla said.
