‘We Just Want to Know Why': Downey Shooting Victim's Family Pleads for Help

James Lyne Lieneke, 19, was walking with friends April 19 when he was confronted by the attacker

Police released surveillance video Thursday in an effort to identify the attacker who shot and killed a 19-year-old man.

The shooting occurred April 19 near Woodruff Avenue and Firestone Boulevard in Downey. The video, acquired from a nearby business, shows the gunman confront James Lieneke before opening fire.

No arrests have been reported in connection with the fatal shooting.

"It doesn't matter if you didn't care for him, you had no right to take my son," Lieneke's mother, Vivian, said at a Thursday news conference. "He was the only thing we had."

At a Thursday news conference regarding the video's release, family members said they do not know why someone would want to harm Lieneke.

"We just want to know why," said Yvonne Gonzalez, the victim's cousin.

Lieneke was walking with friends just before the 3 a.m. shooting. The friends told police they do not know what the gunman said to Lieneke.
