Man Hospitalized After Being Shot by Police in Commerce

A man who allegedly pointed a gun at officers was hospitalized after being shot by police in Commerce on Friday, officials said.

Two Huntington Park Police officers were sitting in an unmarked car while conducting surveillance on a homicide in the 2500 block of Leo Avenue at approximately 9:45 p.m. when man approached them, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The suspect walked up to the driver's door and retrieved a handgun from his waistband, sheriff's deputies said.

The officer on the driver's side lowered the window as both officers identified themselves as police officers. The suspect then allegedly pointed the gun at one of the officers and both officers opened fire, according to deputies.

The man was struck by gunfire multiple times in the upper torso. He was transported to a local hospital and is listed in fair condition.

The gunman is unrelated to the officers' homicide surveillance.

A handgun was recovered at the scene.
