Man Fatally Shot at Mixed-Martial Arts Center Identified

A man shot Thursday at a Tustin mixed-martial arts and boxing training center died at the scene, and police worked to identify who killed him and why.

Police were called at 12:12 p.m. to the strip mall at 14051 Newport Avenue, where the OC Boxing & MMA Academy is located, according to Lt. Bob Wright.

The Orange County Coroner identified the victim on Friday as 44-year-old Fahness Lutalo.

Wright said the motive of the attack "doesn't appear to be a robbery."

Students were devastated to learn that someone they knew at the gym was dead.

"I feel like there's a big hole inside me, and it's just caving in," said Ray Tabani.

Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots Thursday afternoon, and saw two men running from the gym yelling for help.

Police said a man inside suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

"I spend more time with him than I've spent at home with my own parents because I'm here all the time and I love him so much," Tabani said.

Police said they have surveillance video from neighboring businesses in the shopping center and they were trying to identify a suspect, and figure out how he fled from the scene.
