One Dead on 405 Freeway in “Gruesome” Hit-and-Run: CHP

A man was hit and killed on the 405 Freeway in Carson early Sunday morning, authorities said, leaving many lanes of the busy highway closed for over three hours on one of the busiest travel days of the year.

The incident occurred at about 2:25 a.m. near the 405's Avalon Boulevard exit, according to Los Angeles County Fire officials.

A 31-year-old was struck by another vehicle when he got out of his disabled car on the highway's right shoulder, said a California Highway Patrol official, who described the scene as "gruesome."

Investigators spent hours investigating the scene, trying to find physical evidence that can identify the vehicle that hit the man and ripped the driver-side door off, the CHP official said.

Several passing vehicles apparently ran over the scene as well.

Police have no description of the suspect car, and are asking for the public's help.

"If anyone witnessed the actual collision, whether they have a license plate or anything significant at all, please contact the South Los Angeles CHP office," Sgt. Tim Hall said.

All but the HOV lane of the 405 Freeway was closed south of Carson Street as of 6:30 a.m., and was expected to reopen at no earlier than 9 a.m.
