Plane Contained at John Wayne Airport After Report of 2-Year-Old's Illness

The incident was reported at the airport about 2:30 p.m. on a report that a toddler was feverish

A 2-year-old girl fell ill with a fever Friday on a flight from Vancouver to John Wayne Airport, where paramedics met the plane and transported the tot to CHOC Children's Hospital in Orange, a fire captain said.

Orange County Fire Authority personnel were dispatched to the airport about 2:30 p.m. on a report that a toddler was feverish on West Jet Flight 1754, which was carrying 125 passengers, OCFA Capt. Larry Kurtz said.

"The child had flu-like symptoms, had a fever, and was having some back pain," said Kurtz. "As a result, just for precaution, the child was taken to CHOC hospital for evaluation and testing."

Dispatchers initially said it could be a case of meningitis, "but we're pulling back from that," Kurtz said about 3:30 p.m.

Passengers did not need to be quarantined and were all cleared to go to their destinations, Kurtz said.
