Republican Candidates Spend Day in Orange County Campaigning

Poizner and Whitman make one last push in Orange County

Both major Republican gubernatorial candidates will be campaigning in Orange County Saturday, three days before voters decide who will face Democratic Attorney General Jerry Brown in November.

Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner will speak to supporters in Santa Ana before they go door-to-door on his behalf, one day after being endorsed by Maricopa County (Ariz.) Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

"Steve Poizner has been a staunch supporter of Arizona’s illegal immigration law," said Arpaio. "I have witnessed firsthand the effect that this law has had on curbing illegal immigration in our state in its early stages, and I believe that as governor, Steve Poizner would enact a similar law to secure California’s borders.

"Steve Poizner will be tough on illegal immigration, and California and Arizona must work together to fix this problem once and for all."

Poizner’s opponent, former eBay Chief Executive officer Meg Whitman opposes SB 1070, saying a better solution would be to first secure the border, put in place an "economic fence" that would stop employers from hiring illegal immigrants, and prohibit cities from being "sanctuary cities," which do not enforce immigration laws.

Whitman will conduct a 12:30 p.m. rally at Villa Del Sol, 305 N. Harbor Blvd., in Fullerton, the same site she formally announced her candidacy on Sept. 22.

Whitman will discuss her plans for "A New California," according to her campaign's press secretary, Sarah Pompei. Whitman has focused on three issues -- creating jobs, cutting government spending and improving education.
