Threat Closes Antelope Valley College

Antelope Valley College was closed today because of "a threat of violence against the college," school officials said.

The closure was announced in a statement posted shortly before 9 a.m. on the college website.

"The college is in regular contact with law enforcement," the statement said. "The evening class schedule will be updated by 4 p.m."

The investigation was being conducted by the sheriff's department, which declined to provide details on the case. Information on evening classes will be posted on the school's website.

College spokeswoman Liz Diachun said that sometime overnight, "nonspecific threats of violence" were posted on social media and also sent to "a few students."

The sheriff's department was notified about the threats and "by early this morning, (sheriff's deputies) had dramatically beefed up their presence on campus," according to Diachun.

"We put the safety and security of staff and students first" and closed the campus for daytime classes, she said.
