Police were checking grainy surveillance footage in connection with a hit-and-run in South Los Angeles that left a 56-year-old grandmother dead Friday night.
The driver struck the woman near 63rd Street and Crenshaw Boulevard about 9:40 p.m., Los Angeles Police Sgt. Susie Padilla said.
The woman, identified by loved ones as Diane Dupree Phillips, was not walking in a crosswalk when she was hit. Earlier reports indicated the victim was 60 years old.
A dark four-door sedan was seen driving away, Padilla said.
Phillips' friends gathered at the site of the crash and remembered her as a woman who was kind and caring.
"She helped a lot of people, and she couldn't even help herself," said a woman fighting back tears.
Friends said Phillips had fallen on hard times but still found a way to help others.
