Men's Water Polo: United States v. Romania
A Southern Californian-laden United States team squeaked by Montenegro 8-7 to open group play Sunday. There are two groups of six teams in the prelim stage. The top four from each group advance to knockouts, so a win against Romania followed by victory against Great Britain would set up the United States nicely for its final prelim contests against Serbia and Hungary.

Men's Beach Volleyball: Rogers/Dalhausser v. Spain
The United States' defending gold medalists, Santa Barbara's Rogers and Ventura's Dalhausser, got off to a strong start in defeating Japan, 2-0.

Men's Basketball: United States v. Tunisia
The U.S. faces Tunisia Tuesday and Nigeria Thursday before the competition gets tougher against Lithuania Saturday and next week with a matchup against Argentina. We're not saying Kobe Bryant and Team USA are looking past 7-foot-1 Salah Mejri and Tunisia, but you can expect to see a lot of minutes for NBA rookie Anthony Davis.

Women's Beach Volleyball: Kessy/Ross v. Netherlands
Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Lee Walsh are unbeaten all-time at the Olympics, but Orange County's Jen Kessy and April Ross have an opportunity to make waves at the beach (Horse Guards Parade). They opened with a 21-11, 21-18 win over Argentina.

Women's Gymnastics: Team Final
Vault phenom McKayla Maroney, of Laguna Niguel, and Kyla Ross, of Aliso Viejo, competed in Tuesday's team final, leading the United States to gold.

Men's Volleyball: United States v. Germany
The United States opened group play Sunday with a sweep of Serbia with contributions from Anaheim residents Matt Anderson (18 points) and Clay Stanley (13 points). The U.S., ranked fifth in the world, defeated Germany Tuesday to boost its chances of advancing. Results
Women's Soccer: United States v. North Korea
Diamond Bar's Alex Morgan and the U.S. women's soccer team have breezed through their first two contests -- against France and Colombia -- with a maximum six points atop Group G. The U.S. is 3-0-1 against North Korea, which lost its last game 5-0 to France. Results
Men's 200m Butterfly Final: Tyler Clary
Riverside's Tyler Clary qualified for the final Monday, finishing fifth overall. The 23-year-old posted a qualifying time of 1:54.93. Japan's Takeshi Matsuda had the fastest qualifying time, a 1:54.25.
