CicLAvia Returns to the ‘Heart of LA'

Free: Pedal down a car-free Broadway at the bustling bike-tacular.

Standing in the middle of Broadway while taking in the full sweep of architecture, sights, shops, sounds, and the bustle of downtown life?

It can tempt, but the whole "in the middle" part is never recommended, due to all of the vehicles that use the forever-busy thoroughfare throughout the day and night.

But sometimes Broadway closes to cars, like during Fiesta Broadway in the spring, and, even sometimes-ier, you can ride your bicycle right down the center of the road, at your own pace, while doing that aforementioned soaking-up of the sights.

That moment is ahead, on Sunday, Oct. 8, when CicLAvia returns to the "Heart of LA," which includes visits to downtown, Boyle Heights, Chinatown, and Echo Park, too.

It's free to join, as always, and thousands do, with some participants opting for skateboards, the rare pogo stick, and quite often their own two feet.

Important: CicLAvia "is not a race." Hop in where you can, leave from where you want, and keep in mind that there's a two-way flow going on, wherever you enter from.

And entering from multiple points is easy, given the array of Metro stops nearby.

A quartet of hubs, at Echo Park, Mariachi Plaza, Chinatown, and Broadway, are happening places, and solid spots to stop for information. And as is tradition, spying community booths, bike-oriented groups, and food trucks along the way is part of the spokes-sweet scene.

This fall heat wave? It'll begin to break on Oct. 8, making for a perfectly balmy, though not too roasty, day out on your favorite people-powered two-wheeler.

If you've ever wanted to take in the vibrancy of Broadway from the middle of the street, but never have because, well, safety, here's your chance to admire this great thoroughfare from the seat of your bike.
