Broken Water Main Creates Hollywood Sinkhole

A water main broke in Hollywood early Wednesday, gouging out a sinkhole in the street and damaging some nearby apartments.

The gushing water was reported at Gordon Street and Lexington Avenue around 12:45 a.m., drawing firefighters and Department of Water and Power crews to the scene, a Los Angeles police sergeant at the Hollywood Station said.

As of 10:30 a.m., some 60 to 70 residents in the area were still without water, according to DWP spokeswoman Gale Harris. The utility did not have an estimate on when service would be fully restored.

Gushing water may have damaged the roofs of at least two apartments before a DWP crew was able to shut off the main supply.

Some residents in the area were evacuated.
