Coincidentally, both the New York Times and Los Angeles Times run stories today on television shows moving to New York from Los Angeles, an important topic given that our city is losing production work (related: the Senate just shot down a bill that would have offered tax incentives for film companies to stay in the state). Both stories reference ABC's "Ugly Betty," which recently moved from LA to NY: NYT headline: "Tax Credits Bring More TV Shows to New York City" and the LAT headline: "'Ugly' Trend Hitting Hollywood Where It Lives." Goddamn New Yorkers. But as the latter story points out, the cities have been variously competing for the production dollar over the years: New York was home to the movie business in the 1910s-1920s before the industry packed up and moved to LA.
