Television and movie stars engaging in sporting activities are kind of endlessly fascinating to the public ("Battle of the Network Stars" is a prime and historic example). And when a television star happens to be skilled at a particular sport, more attention is drawn. And when they're out playing football or tennis or golf to raise awareness, and funds, for a very worthy cause, the public is supremely intrigued (which is a good thing).
Jack Wagner of "Melrose Place" and "The Bold and The Beautiful" -- and yes, Heather Locklear's paramour -- has hosted a starry golf tourney for the last few years (he has movingly described why he puts on the annual classic). It isn't simply about eagles and putts and showing off for the photogs on the green; the Jack Wagner Celebrity Golf Classic is all about helping The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. And a cavalcade of celebrities always show up to help the daytime star get the word out, in addition to playing a little golf.
