One Tony Night Out

"Follies" just got the Tony-nom love; now see it at the Ahmanson.

We were all set to say "they say timing is everything in theater" but we won't even; absolutely everyone knows that, and we don't need to trot out the ol' "they say" chestnut to make our point.

But sometimes timing goes beyond the well-delivered quip or perfectly orchestrated wink at the audience. Case in point? "Follies," the oh-so-popular Stephen Sondheim musical that first hit the Broadway boards over four decades ago, just got a whole bundle of Tony Award nominations on May 1, including "Best Revival of a Musical."

Nice, right? Now here's the timing part: "Follies" opens at our own Ahmanson, right here in Los Angeles, California, on Thursday, May 3.

It isn't often that a show so recently festooned in Tony-nomination goodness raises the curtain so far away from the Great White Way.

So seize this moment, local musical lovers. And enjoying seeing the cast members who made the revival so well-received. Let's quote the Center Theatre Group here, shall we? Follies comes with "a once-in-a-lifetime cast of Broadway stars, an extraordinary 28-piece orchestra, and one of the largest ensembles ever to appear on the Ahmanson stage."

Major? Major.

Let's also add that some of the actor and actress names in the recent Tony nomination lists are on board for the Ahmanson outing including Jan Maxwell and Danny Burstein, nominated for Best Actress in a Musical and Best Actor in a Musical, respectively.

Follies is singing its lauded heart out from May 3 through June 9. Which is good timing; the Tony Awards will roll out in New York City on Sunday, June 10.
