Touring Lautner's Harvey Residence in Hollywood Hills

On Sunday, the MAK Center and Hammer Museum presented another tour of John Lautner-designed homes in Los Angeles, in conjunction with the Lautner retrospective "Between Earth and Heaven." Sunday's lineup included the 1947 Jacobsen Residence, the 1950 Harvey Residence and 1963's Reiner/Burchill Residence (aka "Silvertop"). The Harvey Residence underwent a massive renovation project after it was bought in 1998 by actress Kelly Lynch and Mitch Glazer. By the time Lynch and Glazer bought the property, the house was in fairly poor shape and was marketed as a tear-down. Visitors were treated to a personal tour by Kelly Lynch, who spent the day at the house and is clearly passionate not just about her own house, but sensitive midcentury preservation in general. And yes, the house is a showstopper. Kelly explained she now uses the large circular main room for entertaining, benefits and parties, as well as showcasing their art collection (she removed a John Currin piece because of the tour). Ten years later, she still hasn't figured out how best to renovate the kitchen, and she plans on redoing the landscaping with a vegetable garden and more sustainable plants.
