LAX Slips in Airport Food Rankings

Fewer healthy options than other airports

A new airport food review is out and LAX dropped a notch in a survey of 15 of the nation's busiest major airports.

LAX slipped from 8th to 9th place in this year's report by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. Forty-two out of 55 LAX restaurants offer menu items that were low fat, high fiber and cholesterol free.

"This celebrity hot spot dropped five points from last year's score," according to the report.

"Healthful highlights include the Vegetarian Works pizza (hold the cheese) at Malibu Al's, vegetable sushi rolls at Sushi Boy, the roasted pepper and eggplant sandwich at Brioche Doree," according to the PCRM.

So who ranks No. 1 in the PCRM report? Detroit's Metro Airport received a perfect score.

"Every restaurant at the airport offers at least one healthful entree, such as a veggie burrito (hold the cheese again) at Diego's Mexican Cantina, the black bean burger at Slapshotz, and the hummus and veggie platter at the Heineken Bar," according to the report.

San Francisco International Airport came in second, with 96 percent of its restaurants offering nutritious dishes.

"Some airport still leave hungry passengers scrambling to find nutritious meals," according to the PCRM.

But there's a healthy, but small trend in the latest statistics.

PCRM dietitians found 83 percent of airport restaurants now offer at least one healthy meal, up 1 percent from last year.

Places like snack food kiosks and small coffee shops were not included in the review because they do not serve entrees.
