Police Fatally Shoot Man Who Allegedly Charged at Officers With Knife

Police fatally shot a knife-wielding man they say charged a motorcycle officer who was conducting a traffic stop in Anaheim on Monday.

The officer had stopped the driver of a Chevrolet Suburban about 2:40 p.m. in the 300 block of West La Palma Avenue when a black Ford F-150 pickup truck that was unrelated to the traffic stop pulled up behind them, officials with the Anaheim Police Department said.

The F-150 driver allegedly got out of the vehicle with a kitchen knife and went after the officer.

A second officer who was in the area got involved and was also threatened, police said. Both officers fired their guns, killing the man.

"I just see a guy running with the knife and they just shot him like eight times," Witness William Casarrubias said.

"It is a little odd that the driver of the black truck stopped in the middle of the road and then got out and assaulted the officers," said Anaheim police Lt. Eric Trapp.

The man was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

No officers were injured.

La Palma Avenue from Lemon Street to Harbor Boulevard was closed during the investigation.
