Firefighters are protecting homes from a brush fire that broke out amid hot and windy conditions Friday afternoon in the foothills east of Los Angeles near the 210 Freeway.
Homes near the fire were being evacuated at about 2 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Nearby roads were closed as crews deployed firefighting equipment. The Leroy Haynes Center, which offers programs for children, in the 200 block of West Baseline Road also was evacuated.
The three-acre fire is burning in the Live Oak Canyon area near La Verne (map), about 30 miles east of Los Angeles. Most of the fire activity was reported near Broken Spur Lane and Rough Rider Road.
A water-dropping SuperScooper and SkyCrane responded to the location, a hillside near several homes. Aerial video showed firefighters around a hillside home as the fire climbed toward the residence.
Fire officials described the brush as "medium to heavy fuel."
Details regarding the cause of the fire were not immediately available. No injuries were reported.
