Courts Take Wednesday Off

Most Superior Court courtrooms in Los Angeles County are closed for a furlough day program aimed at curbing the state's financial crisis.

The furlough day is the first of 12 scheduled for the Superior Court system, held on the third Wednesday of each month through next June.

Court staff said most courthouses will have at least one courtroom open for custody arraignments, felony bench warrants and other limited business.

The furlough was prompted by a projected budget deficit of up to $120 million for the next four years. The cuts are expected to save about $18 million per year.

The Los Angeles court network, the nation's largest trial court system, has 600 courtrooms in 50 courthouses throughout the county.
