Escaped Inmates Captured in Castaic: Police

Two inmates who escaped from a Castaic jail were apprehended Wednesday evening, according to police.

The men, who were in jail during their armed robbery trial, were taken into custody in a Castaic neighborhood, according to police. Authorities say a tipster spotted the escapees trying to find civilian clothing along Hasley Canyon Road.

The men may have escaped from the North County Correctional Facility at around 1 a.m. Wednesday, said Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore

The inmates were identified as Jose Aldana and Winder Barrios, of Van Nuys.

Whitmore said the men may have fled while working at a kitchen loading dock at the jail 40 miles north of downtown Los Angeles.

Whitmore said about 80 deputies were hunting for the men, who were arrested last year in Los Angeles. Deputies in helicopters and on motorcycles searched the rugged terrain around the facility.

The jail was locked down, and sirens were activated to warn the surrounding communities, said Deputy Benjamin Grubb.
