Flight Loses Engine, Makes Emergency Landing

Another aircraft was dispatched from Denver to take the passengers on to LAX

United Airlines passengers flying from Denver finally arrived at LAX Sunday after their plane lost power to one of its two engines and had to be diverted to Grand Junction, Colo.

"About 25 to 30 minutes into the flight, the pilot came on and said the engine had an oil malfunction of some kind so we've shut it down and we're going to divert to Grand Junction," said passenger Alex Sklarevski.

A United spokesman told the Denver ABC TV station that there were 125 people aboard Flight 321, including six crew members.

Some passengers reported smelling fuel when the aircraft took off.

FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said the plane touched down at 10:44 a.m. Pacific time at the airport in western Colorado. Passengers reportedly applauded the uneventful landing.

"I was kind of scared but it went smoothly. The crew was fine," said passenger Doris Gilbert.

Another aircraft was dispatched from Denver to take the passengers on to LAX.
